Risk Factors

Risk Factors Summary-

Changeable Factors:

  • Exposure: People who work outside more often and don't use Repellents are more at-risk.
  • Area: Nearby stagnant water and puddles contribute greatly to risk. People who clear these areas regularly are safer than those who don't.

Unchangeable Factors:

  • Age: Young children (less than 10 years of age) and older adults (50+ years of age) are more at-risk.
  • Immune Strength: Some people's immune systems are weaker naturally, or have been weakened by disease or unhealthy habits. People with these weaker immune systems are more at risk if they are infected.
  • Time of Year: Mosquitoes are most active in the late summer and early fall months. Risk for West Nile infection is also higher during these period
