Up until this past prep season, the words "Academy of Academic Excellence" rarely if ever graced the pages of the Daily Press sports section. The Knights were unaffiliated and their neophyte sports programs had experienced little, if any, successes. But that has all changed with the influx of talent to the charter school in Apple Valley.

The Academy for Academic Excellence at the Lewis Center for Educational Research built its name on a program that mixed home schooling with innovative in-classroom teaching. But in August, the science-focused charter school started a new year with a new education program requiring most students to be in the classroom full time. While some parents still prefer the freedom of independent study, most chose to conform. Only 16 percent remain on the combined classroom and home schooling or hybrid program.

According to Kate O'Rourke, screenwriter for the project, the idea for a documentary was born with the death of Eva Conrad, who edited the Apple Valley News from 1950 to 1983 and later wrote for the Senior News. Conrad's sharp memory and salty sense of humor had long been a godsend to local historians.
